Wrestling: Depth, toughness in consolation brackets, lifts Concord to 4th at Capital City Classic

Tournament wrestling doesn’t come down entirely to finalists. The Concord High School wrestling team didn’t have a single finalist on its home mats at Saturday’s annual Capital City Classic, but the Crimson Tide gutted out victories and pins through the consolation brackets, placing six wrestlers and finishing fourth out of 31 teams.

New Hampshire isn’t known as a football powerhouse, but every once in a while, a star is discovered and becomes a highly coveted recruit. That’s the case of Phillips Exeter Academy’s Isaiah Reese, a Gilford native, who just inked a deal to play for the University of Virginia in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Alpine skiing: Hopkinton wins 3rd consecutive Capital Cup

For the past two years, the Capital Cup has resided at the Everyday Cafe in Contoocook. After Wednesday evening’s victory, the Hopkinton Alpine ski team brought it back yet again. Senior Merrick Chapin topped the boys’ standings, and both the Hopkinton boys’ and girls’ teams won their respective events as the Hawks claimed their third consecutive Capital Cup on Wednesday at Proctor Academy.

Nordic Ski: Concord, Hopkinton and Kearsarge get wins against tough competition in Kearsarge Classic

Conditions and logistics finally cooperated to allow for one of the biggest high school Nordic skiing races so far this season, the Kearsarge Classic at Proctor Academy’s ski area in Andover. The Concord, Hopkinton and Kearsarge boys’ and girls’ teams raced against 10 other schools on a challenging course to accumulate points and find their rhythm with plenty of skiing left in the season.

Kearsarge and Sunapee hosted Concord and three other schools at Colby-Sawyer’s Hogan Center pool on Friday night for some varsity swimming action as the teams approach the end of their regular seasons, and gear up for the last chance meets and championships in February.

On Tuesday night, Hopkinton traveled to Kearsarge for a Division III basketball doubleheader. These rivalry matches brought out the best of all the teams, as they had already faced each other in tight contests earlier in the season.
