Boys’ Hockey

John Stark-Hopkinton/H-D 7, Pembroke-Campbell 1

Key players: JSHHD – Kip Hedquist (3 goals), Ryan Podsadowski (2 goals, assist), Tad Stokes (2 assists), Tyler Andrews (goal), Ollie Zahn (first varsity goal), Finn Murphy (assist), Owen Buss (assist), Cooper Twombly (assist, first varsity point), Lucas Arlen (26 saves); PAC – Garrett Bishop (48 saves), Brady Gerardi (goal), Trevor Lemaire (assist)

Highlights: Hedquist scored three goals to open the game, including a shorthanded goal for his third tally and Gerardi scored a power-play goal for PAC six seconds later. Andrews had the final goal of the first period to give JSHHD a 4-1 lead. PAC outscored the General Hawks in the second period, but Podsadowski scored two goals in a 40 second span in the third and Zahn notched his first varsity goal to ice the game.

Coach’s quote: “We started the game with a solid attack and kept shooting the puck to the net. After taking the early lead we got off our defensive game and let PAC control the second period. Glad to see the team come out strong for the third.” – JSHHD’s Denis Kolehmainen

Boys’ Basketball

Kearsarge 60, Prospect Mountain 42

Key players: Kearsarge  – Noah Whipple (15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals), Austin Needham (13 points, 5 assists, 3 steals), Eli Whipple (7 points), Liam Miller (6 points), Ajay Tremblay (5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals)

Highlights: Great defense led to an early 22-9 lead for Kearsarge after the first quarter. Continued hustle and unselfish play had the Cougars up 39-19 at the half and they never looked back. Blake LaMothe and Blake Grieco scored their first varsity points.

Key players: Franklin – Harrison Kaplan (29 points), Matt Carlsen (19 points); Nute – Silas Picard (20 points)

Highlights: After a back-and-forth first half, Franklin took control of the game in the third quarter, stretching its lead to 18. Nute turned the pressure up late in the game to cut the lead back down to four, but ultimately ran out of time as the Tornadoes were able to hang on for their second win of the young season.

Coach’s quote: “There were definitely encouraging stretches with a lot of positives to build on, but we must improve our decision making and ball control if we want to compete in the division. If we can play up tempo, but cut down on turnovers we can be a dangerous team.” – Franklin’s David Bedard

Girls’ Basketball

Hopkinton 47, Hillsboro-Deering 17

Key players: Hopkinton – Shaylee Murdough (8 points, 7 steals), Crissy Johnson (4 points, 2 steals), Avery Chase, Charlotte Tanuvasa; H-D – Emery Greene (9 points), Morgan Dean (6 points)

Highlights: The Hawks struggled shooting through the first quarter, taking a narrow 13-8 lead, but a strong defensive second quarter opened up a 26-9 halftime lead, and Hopkinton led the rest of the way. Ten different Hawk players scored points in the victory.

Coaches’ quotes: “Shots weren’t falling consistently tonight, but I thought our ball movement and defensive energy opened up scoring chances in the second half. Overall, a nice bounce back from our first loss Monday night.” – Hopkinton’s Mike Mahoney

Key players: Kearsarge – Ava Shapiro (16 points), Aya Terayama (7 points), Madden Huff (5 points); Stevens – Bella Bovell (9 points)

Highlights: The Cougars pulled away in the second quarter, leading 21-14 at halftime after a 7-7 first quarter. Kearsarge led 30-18 after three quarters of Wednesday night’s defensive battle.

Highlights: Brien’s pin and Merrill’s 16-10 win by decision were both big wins for the Tide and made the difference in a tightly-contested dual meet on Concord’s home mats.
