As the sun set on Memorial Field, the Concord High boys’ lacrosse team headed into a second overtime period with Hollis-Brookline.

Coming off a loss to Nashua South and a four-game skid overall, the Crimson Tide needed a win. Facing a tough Cavalier team that was undefeated through four starts, including a win against Nashua South, Concord found a way to persevere in 12-11 in double overtime.

“They’ve had a few hard games in a row and they learned a lot of lessons from those. So that’s what we’re most impressed with, is they took all the lessons from the last games and put them towards this one,” Concord head coach Jeff Smith said.

The first three quarters of Monday evening’s contest were an intense back-and-forth affair where either team could have capitalized on momentum to pull ahead. Toward the end of the third period, Hollis-Brookline brothers Bennett and John Paul Torgersen both scored to put the host Tide (2-4) in a three-goal hole, 11-8.

Earlier in the game, Concord came back from a deficit even larger after going down 4-1 in the first. Whenever the Tide went down, got pushed around or simply looked outmatched, they found ways to stay in it.

It took everyone on offense to play their part. Sophomore Jaden Haas and junior Ben Ryder scored four goals each, and junior captain Liam Yeatman notched five assists, often setting up either Haas or Ryder.

“Spirits were maybe a little low, but we knew it was going to be a grind today,” Yeatman said. “We knew this might have been a team that was maybe a little more developed than us, but it came down to our guys going out there and giving 100% on the field. It feels great.”

Captains Noah Wyatt and Broc Pelchat led the defense and stayed solid, barking organizational orders throughout the game, which helped the Tide shut out the Cavaliers through the last 15 minutes of play. Junior goalie Harry Snow had six saves in total to secure the win.

“It was great. (Offense) finally brought the heat; defense kept up. It really put us over the edge on that one, brought all the energy. The bench was hyped,” Pelchat added.

It was Haas who came up big in the end to win the game, although he dominated all game on taking draws and grabbing ground balls.

On the winning goal, Haas rolled to his right with his back turned to the goal, and with two defenders on him he quickly flipped a shot low into the corner as he fell to the ground. The night had nearly set upon the field, and his shot was fired with so much force that it was difficult to see exactly where it landed.

The net unmistakably waved with the impact, and the team erupted. Haas ran straight toward the bench, and everyone crashed into one big pile to celebrate the victory.

Hollis-Brookline dropped to 4-1 with the defeat.
