High schools: MV field hockey advances to D-II quarterfinals, Pembroke loses, Tuesday’s soccer results

D-II Field Hockey

No. 6 Merrimack Valley 4, No. 11 Lebanon 0

Key players: MV – Kaiya Mercier (2 goals, assist), Abbey Thompson (goal), Izzy Tucker (goal), Alyssa Brodeur (2 assists), Lauren Bailey (midfield), Zetta St. Onge (defense)

Highlights: MV opened up the scoring five minutes into the second quarter of Tuesday’s preliminary round game when Thompson connected on a shot off a penalty corner. Just over two minutes later, MV went up 2-0 when Brodeur fed Mercier the ball across the circle. The Pride tallied two more goals in the fourth when Mercier got an open look at the stroke line and slipped it in the corner, and then Brodeur fed Tucker who got deflection past the Raider goalie to secure MV’s spot in the Division II quarterfinals. MV held the advantage in penalty corners, 16-1. Lebanon’s goalie had 15 saves. The Pride will play against No. 3 John Stark on Friday night at New England College.

No. 7 Hanover 1, No. 10 Pembroke 0

Key players: Pembroke – Annika Jawidzik (23 saves)

Highlights: Hanover scored the only goal of the game in the first quarter when a shot deflected in off a Pembroke defender. The Bears were relentless in their pressure throughout the game, but the Spartans were able to keep off the board for the final three quarters. Hanover had 29 corners, including 14 in the third quarter, but the Spartans were able to limit quality chances. Pembroke just missed a corner attempt in the fourth corner that would’ve forced overtime and the Spartans’ season ended in the preliminary round.

Key players: Coe-Brown – Jaelyn Demers (3 goals, assist), Ellie Escabi (2 goals, assist), Cam Buchanan (goal), Bella Lapierre (2 assists), Maggie Escabi (assist), Amanda Thomas (defense)

Highlights: Ellie Escabi and Demers connected in the seventh minute and Maggie Escabi assisted on Ellie Escabi’s first goal to put Coe-Brown up 2-0. Demers completed her hat-trick in the second half, while Buchanan scored her first varsity goal. Lapierre did a good job setting up teammates for scoring opportunities.

Highlights: Maskwa tucked in a through pass to LaPierre who slotted home the game winner with under five minutes to go.
