High schools: Pembroke boys, Bow girls win Capital Classic; Coe-Brown boys win Basketball Bash in OT

Boys’ Basketball

Pembroke 66, ConVal 47

Highlights: After a 14-14 tie at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans had a big second quarter to lead 34-26 at halftime and extended it to 52-38 at the end of the third to claim the Capital Classic championship on their home court on Monday night. Pembroke played well defensively in the second half, holding Close to just two points in the final 16 minutes after he scored 14 in the first half.

Coe-Brown 66, Belmont 64, OT

Key players: Coe-Brown – Grant Hayes (19 points), Jack Matson (15 points), Ryan Kouchoukos (14 points), Matt Flanagan (9 points), James McKane (5 points), Bruce LaPierre (4 points); Belmont – Keegan Martinez (24 points, 6 of his team’s 7 in OT), Treshawn Ray (18 points, all 8 of team’s points in 4th quarter), Brady Thurber (6 points)

Highlights: LaPierre connected on a pair of free throws with 9.6 seconds left in OT to lift the Bears to the 45th annual Mike Lee Holiday Basketball Bash title at Farmington High School on Monday night. Belmont led by as many as five points in the fourth quarter, but Coe-Brown came back to force overtime with the score tied 57-57. It was a tightly-contested final throughout the night. Coe-Brown led 21-20 after the first quarter, and Belmont had narrow leads at halftime, 37-34, and through three quarters, 49-48. Matson was named the tournament’s MVP, while Flanagan and Kouchoukos were named to the All-Tournament Team. Martinez and Ray were also named to the All-Tournament Team for the Raiders.

Concord shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and led 30-24 at halftime, but shot only 27 percent in the second half and overtime, and didn’t score any points in OT.

Girls’ Basketball

Bow 43, Merrimack Valley 41

Highlights:  The Falcons trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter and 18-17 at halftime, but took a 28-27 lead at the end of the third quarter and hung on to win the Capital Classic championship in a physical battle on Monday night. 

Records: Bow 3-0 D-II; MV 2-1 D-II

Pembroke 54, Concord Christian 51

Key players: Pembroke – Kate Stephens (21 points), Anne Phillips (11 points), Kaitlin Arenella (10 points), Hailey Steinmetz (10 points); Concord Christian – Lilli Carlile (17 points), Kate Smith (16 points), Emma Smith (12 points)

Highlights: The Kingsmen led 31-29 at halftime, but the Spartans outscored Concord Christian 19-6 in the third quarter to take a 48-37 lead and held off a Concord Christian comeback to win the Capital Classic third-place game. Carlile scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line to spark Concord Christian’s comeback. Pembroke led 50-40 in the middle of the frame, but the Kingsmen cut the lead to five points with 1:30 left. This contest was a rematch of last year’s Division II championship game which Concord Christian won, 65-53.
