Concord High’s volleyball team could not pull off a comeback against Nashua North on Monday night and lost in four sets despite a valiant effort, leaving the Crimson Tide (0-3) in the hunt for their first win.

The Tide had a sluggish start to the match and they had a few unforced errors that cost them early. Nashua came out of the gate with a strong attack and was able to exploit gaps in Concord’s backcourt defense with lobbed and float serves into the middle and spikes into the corners.

Nashua sped off with a lead and did not let up. Concord lost the first set 25-19 despite clawing back from a 21-13 deficit.

In the second set, Concord improved. The Tide closed some gaps and senior outside hitter Brooke Wyatt and setter Sydney Fye blocked well at the net. Despite the efforts on attack, Nashua had all the answers to keep the ball alive.

A few mistakes on sets and receptions cost the Tide the set again, and they lost the second set 25-20.

“Starting off with energy,” said Concord coach Maria Wimpey. “We need to figure out how to come out at the beginning of the game and stay like that the full time.”

The third set felt different. The mental mistakes that had plagued the team in the first two sets were gone. The two teams exchanged aces and hard spikes, and Concord took a 15-13 lead. Middle blockers Kelley and MacDonald combined for intelligent plays at the net with the help of senior Madison Mikkelsen and the rest of the backs to pull ahead.

Concord turned the tables on the Titans and finished strong to win the set, 25-20.

However, the energy would not last as Nashua was relentless in its attack and took the last set, 25-20.

“They were picking everything up and the service as well. Their services were killing us,” said Whimpey.

Moving forward, Wimpey’s team will focus on not allowing themselves to dig a hole early and chase the game. Most importantly, they’ll work to tighten their defensive gaps that Nashua’s hitters were able to exploit.

“Serve, receive, serve, receive, and then hit, setter, hitter connections,” she said.

Concord started its volleyball season with tough losses to Londonderry and Hollis-Brookline. The Tide will look to bounce back at Bishop Guertin on Tuesday and at home on Friday night against Exeter.
