When the New Hampshire Women’s Amateur Championship tees off on Monday at the Derryfield Country Club, several notable players from the Capital Area will make an appearance.
One may even be crowned a champion after three 18-hole rounds on the 5,502, par-70 course.
The field of 30 golfers features top local names from the recent Mid-Am. Kat Bordeau, three-time New Hampshire Women’s Player of the Year, will hit the links after delivering a third-place, 14-over finish at Lochmere Golf & Country Club two weeks ago. Fourth-place Beth Hamilton, fifth-place Corey Richardson and sixth-place Caroline Fang will join her, albeit at later tee times.
61-year-old Bordeau has already won the Women’s Spring Four-Ball this summer. Along with Hamilton, she took top honors in the Women’s Senior Championship and Women’s Team Championship.
Younger players will also compete. Sixteen-year-old Mady Savary and 20-year-old Julianna Megan tied for second place in last year’s state am with a 12-over, 228-stroke performance. With defending champion Carys Fenessy not registered to play, the two Youth on Course members will now take another swing at the title.
Savary, a rising junior at Bishop Brady, was named the Division III Player of the Year at the conclusion of last year’s high school season. She earned a spot on the D-III All-State First Team after taking silver at the New Hampshire girls’ individual state championship and posting the lowest average score in the division (37.8 per round).
Megan, a rising junior at Holy Cross, ranks eighth for the Crusaders in all-time career lowest scoring average and played 20 of the team’s 26 rounds last season. She is part of a six-player collegiate contingent that will appear in the tournament.
Derryfield Country Club will host the state am for the first time since 1955. The Manchester course underwent major renovation in 2015, adding drainage, irrigation, new greens, expanded teeing grounds and fairway bunkers. Its white/gold tournament tees have a 72.5 USGA course rating.
Golfers will tee off at 7:30 a.m. each morning, Monday through Wednesday.
“To see past champions, college players and juniors competing on the same stage is a true celebration of women’s golf in New Hampshire,” said Darin MacEacheron, director of women’s golf for New Hampshire Golf. “Derryfield will be a fantastic test, and we’re expecting a great week of golf.”
