Join Bob Manley, co-Founder of Hermit Woods Winery & Eatery, for a unique hike to the gravesite of Joseph Plumer, the famed Hermit of Meredith Hill, on Sept. 28 at 9:30 a.m. Joseph Plumer, who passed away in 1862 at 88, rests beside the foundations of his home and barn in the heart of Hermit Town Forest — a place that inspired the name of Hermit Woods Winery & Eatery.
A trail to the gravesite once existed but was closed due to misuse and damage to the Plumer’s resting place. To preserve the site, the Meredith Conservation Commission made the tough decision to allow the trail to disappear over time. However, recognizing the importance of this historical location, the Commission has partnered with Bob Manley to conduct small, guided tours that honor both the forest and the Plumer’s grave.
During the hike, participants will visit Plumer's gravestone and explore the remaining foundations of his home and barn, along with the stone wall he built to enclose his livestock. Manley will share Joseph's remarkable story, as recounted in a paper written by one of his relatives in 1900.
The hike will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. from the Meredith and Sanbornton town border on Hermit Woods Road. Attendees should arrive early to secure parking and prepare for the hike. A small parking area is available, with additional roadside parking permitted. The round-trip hike covers less than a mile but requires good physical fitness due to stream crossings, hilly terrain, fallen trees, and overgrown forest. Since there is no trail (and we aim to keep it that way), sturdy boots, appropriate clothing, and hiking poles are recommended.
As a special thank you, all participants will receive a two-for-one coupon for a tour and tasting at Hermit Woods Winery. Bob Manley will continue the story of the founding of Hermit Woods, its connection to the Hermit, and the craft of producing wine. Tours are offered every Saturday at noon and 1:30 p.m., concluding with a wine tasting.
To respect the residents of Hermit Woods Road, the hike is limited to 10 participants. Early RSVPs are encouraged to secure a spot. Interested individuals can sign up by visiting hermitwoods.com/events or emailing info@hermitwoods.com. A minimum donation of $1 to the Meredith Conservation Commission or the Meredith Historical Society is required to secure your place on the hike, with additional contributions welcomed. Your support is greatly appreciated and will help preserve our forests and history.
