A 72-year-old hiker from Virginia was found dead Thursday morning, laying on the Gulfside Trail near the junction of the West Side Trail about half a mile from the Mount Washington summit.
The man, who has not been publicly identified as his family or next of kin are notified, was found around 8:30 a.m. He was “obviously deceased” and lifesaving measures were not taken, according to the state Fish and Game Department in a press release.
Being that the man was found about 425 feet north of the Mount Washington Cog Railway tracks, officials enlisted the help of the railway, which offered a train and personnel to help retrieve the body, officials said.
A recovery team rode the train up and then hiked to the scene with a litter. After placing the body in the litter, the team hiked back to the train, which went back down to the base station, according to authorities.
The body was then brought to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Concord, officials said.
Authorities believe the man “likely succumbed to environmental exposure,” the release said. He was wearing jeans, a dark navy blue raincoat, and brown hiking boots, and had a small backpack with him. His driver’s license was found on him and used to identify him.
The hiker wasn’t ready for the conditions in the White Mountains, authorities said. They believe he rode the Cog Railway up to the summit in the morning or early afternoon Wednesday, and attempted to hike down.
