Henniker school budget, contracts pass

This is the 30th anniversary for some of Henniker’s unique voting-booth covers, which were decorated by elementary school children in around 1994. They have become such a tradition in town that some voters will wait to mark their ballot in a specific booth with a decoration that they like.

Incumbent Select Board member Kris Blomback was re-elected while Peter Flynn will replace Scott Osgood on the five-person board after Tuesday’s election in Henniker.

In the Henniker School District, voters easily passed the operating budget of $10.07 million, an increase of 2.9%, as well as a new two-year contract for teachers and one for support staff.

The school tax rate is estimated to increase from $8.45 per $100,000 of assessed valuation to $9.31, raising the annual tax bill on a $3o0,000 house by $258 a year.

The election saw light turnout. Among those who cast ballots were Alexis and Mike Deruisseau, who said they would always come out on election day even if there were no issues of interest.

“If we don’t vote, they’ll take it away – it is a responsibility we don’t take lightly,” said Alexis, who noted that she went to high school in what is now the Community School, where the voting takes place.

In the only other contested town position, Sue Fetzer defeated Scott Dias for a three-year seat as a trustee of the trust funds. Lori Marko did not run for re-election.

Town warrant items, including the town operating budget, will be taken up at traditional town meeting on Saturday, March 16, at 1 p.m. in the Henniker Community School, 51 Western Ave.

On the school side, the teachers contract would give an 8.8% hike in the first year for the 27 teachers who have not reached maximum seniority or education level, and a 4.5% raise for the other 16. The second year of the contract would provide a 4.5% pay increase for all teachers.
