Letter: EFAs are not fiscally responsible

In a recent letter by Ryan Bilodeau, he claims Education Freedom Accounts save taxpayers money. I’m glad he is a theology teacher and not a math teacher as his calculations don’t add up. A student outside of the public school system that costs taxpayers $0 dollars today will cost taxpayers $5,000 after expanding EFAs. How is that fiscally responsible?
Mr. Bilodeau’s claim that EFAs will save taxpayers $20,000 a year for students in public schools that leave is also faulty. A single student leaving a district does not save $20,000 because a single student has no impact on costs like heating, electricity and even staffing. Enough students would need to leave in a single grade level to eliminate a staff position to save any real money.
Voucher advocates need to acknowledge EFAs aren’t about school choice or about money following a student. EFAs are a license for the wealthy and for private schools to grift taxpayers. Any elected official that supports EFAs needs to acknowledge they are not a fiscal conservative.
