A ski lift on Cannon Mountain Ski Area halted Wednesday morning due to a broken bolt and 64 people had to be brought down from the chairs by rope. Nobody was injured.
According to Cannon Mountain, at about 10:13 a.m. a bolt on the power take-off shaft, which transmits power from the engine to the lift cables, failed on the Peabody Express Quad. A rope evacuation was performed by Cannon Mountain Ski Patrol and with the help of additional mountain operations staff. The evacuation was finished by 12:23 p.m.
The incident comes two days after a more serious lift accident at Attitash Ski Area in Bartlett, when a lift chair came separated from the cable and fell 20 feet to the ground, injuring the skier who was riding in it.
The Peabody Express Quad was closed for the day, although service remained on other lifts.
Cannon Mountain Ski Area is owned by the state of New Hampshire.
