Hopkinton spread the wealth of goals against Newfound in a 6-0 win over the Bears (1-6-0) on Monday to remain undefeated on the season in Division III girls’ soccer.

The Hawks improved to 7-0-1 on the season – with their only tie against Trinity early in the season – and looked poised to make another deep run in the playoffs after falling short in the semifinals last season. Head coach Mike Zahn thinks his team still has room to improve before then.

“Making sure that they’re focused on closing the ball down from shooting range,” he said. “You got to be able to do it against the good teams. You got to be able to score off combination, to be able to score one-timers from across.”

Junior right winger Annie Morrall opened the scoring for the Hawks early on a counterattack and was able to chip it over Newfound’s goalkeeper closing in on the ball. The Hawks would go on to score three more goals before halftime on creative long balls and by taking on defenders one-on-one.

Despite the Hawks dominating possession and ball movement throughout the game, they struggled to convert goals from quick build-up play and crosses and instead relied more on the defensive disorder of Newfound.

“You just need to focus on that’s your goal of the game, to move the ball well to feet and play as a team. So I think just continuing to play well will help keep us motivated,” said Zahn.

The team has had players out because of injuries and sickness, and for this game Hopkinton finally fielded a full squad. The completeness of the team showed across the field as the Hawks played well in the back and did not allow shots on goal from inside the box.

The chemistry between players showed on the pitch as well with five different goalscorers on the scoresheet. The Guadagno sisters, Marcella and Gemma, scored one and two goals, respectively, for Hopkinton.

Midfielder Skylar Clay scored her first goal of the season, coming off the bench with a good turnaround shot in the middle of the box. Senior striker and leading scorer Isabella Serzans capped off the dominant performance by her team with a goal off a rebound from the Newfound keeper’s hands after a shot by Sofia Upton.

“The team seems pretty close this year, which is good. They do spaghetti dinners once a week before the home game and things like that. I think that the stuff goes a long way, too,” said Zahn.

The Hawks will play at home against a tough rival in Stevens, which has a 6-2-0 record, on Saturday at noon.
