NH Big Read: ‘The Bear’

What: How do stories shape our past, present, and future? Andrew Krivak will take up this question when he discusses writing “The Bear,” a novel in which nature serves as a protagonist, and how living in New Hampshire’s Monadnock region brought that vision to life.

When: Oct. 14 with reception at 1 p.m. and author talk at 2 p.m.

Oktoberfest

What: Jazz Sanctuary brings Germany to Concord for a celebration of polka music. The service starts with a 30 minute music set followed by an informal worship service that will have more music interspersed throughout. The theme for this month is based on the German word “gemütlichkeit,” which means “a state or feeling of warmth, friendliness, and good cheer.”

When: Oct. 15, at 2:30 p.m.

Where: First Congregational Church, 79 Clinton St., in Concord (Inside Wesley United Methodist Church)

Father/Daughter Artist Exhibit

What: Douglas Richards of Bow, and his daughter, Laura Aldridge of Virginia have an exhibit titled “Some of This, and Some of That: Recent Works.” Both artists are primarily self- taught. Their individual styles and methods are quite diverse, Both are skilled, and curious of everything that surrounds them. They ‘see’ paintings whether they go for a drive or simply step outside of their respective back doors.

When: The month of October during gallery hours, Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Where: Baker Free Library, 509 South St. in Bow.

Dvorak’s 7th Symphony, Bohemian Rhapsodies

What: This vibrant New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra concert explores the rich tapestry of Czech and English music, traversing spirited overtures, evocative suites, fantastical scherzos, soul-stirring concertos, and impassioned symphonies.

When: Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
