D-III Girls’ Basketball

No. 9 Hopkinton 48, No. 8 Berlin 46

Key players: Hopkinton – Shaylee Murdough (14 points, 11 rebounds), Sydney Westover (12 points, 14 rebounds), Helen Yeaton (8 points); Berlin – McKenna Kelley (15 points)

Highlights: With the game tied 46-46 with six seconds left, the Hawks inbounded to Westover, who drove the length of the floor and found a cutting Murdough for the game-winning basket at the buzzer, sending Hopkinton through to the quarterfinals of the Division III tournament with an upset victory over the Mountaineers. The Hawks will play at No. 1 St. Thomas (16-0) on Saturday.

Coach’s quote: “This was everything you could want from a playoff game. Credit to Berlin. They had multiple chances in the last 30 seconds, but we stayed composed defensively to get the stop and ball back. All 13 girls contributed tonight. Great team effort.” – Hopkinton’s Mike Mahoney

Records: Hopkinton 12-5; Berlin 12-7

No. 6 Prospect Mountain 42, No. 11 Belmont 23

Key players: Prospect – Elena Munoz-Martin (11 points); Belmont  – Maddie Carrier (12 points, four 3s), Madelyn Besegai (6 points)

Highlights: The Raiders kept the game close early, trailing 11-10 after the first quarter and 22-15 at halftime, but only scored one point in the third quarter. Timberwolves took a 28-16 lead into the fourth and didn’t let Belmont close the gap, ending the Raiders season in the preliminary round of the Division III tournament. Belmont finishes the season with nine wins, two more than last season, in Roger Carroll’s first year as head coach.
