A fire severely damaged a new home on Cranberry Meadow Drive in Peterborough Monday night.
“Literally, they moved in Christmas weekend,” Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker said.
Walker said firefighters were dispatched at 7:41 p.m., and the fire was coming from the roof of the house.
“It was all up in the attic area,” and there was little damage on the first floor, Walker said.
Two people and two cats were in the house, Walker said. All got out safely, and Walker said they have gone to a house they own in Maine. According to the real estate listing site Redfin, the three-bedroom, 3 1/2-bath home measures 3,100 square feet, sits on 19.82 acres and sold for $1.86 million in February 2023. Paul LaRoche, owner of Cranberry Meadow Estates developer LR3 Development, said the house was finished in November.
The fire was under control at about 9:20 p.m. Crews at the scene Tuesday morning had to put out an area that had flared up, but Walker said there was no more damage.
“I know that their insurance company is up there looking at it,” he said.
After an investigation with the state Fire Marshal’s Office early Tuesday morning, Walker said the fire started around the flue from the wood stove.

“We do not know whether it was failure of the flue pipe, whether it was failure of installation or what the specific cause was,” he said.
In addition to Peterborough, officers from Jaffrey, Temple, New Ipswich, Hancock, Dublin, Rindge, Milford, Francestown, Hillsborough, Jaffrey ambulance, the Peterborough Police Department and state fire marshal’s office responded, and Walker estimated that approximately 40 firefighters were involved.
LaRoche said the plan is to rebuild once the investigation into the fire is done and insurance matters are taken care of. Right now, he said they’re just waiting for the report from the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
“Then we’ll go from there,” he said.
