HARTS LOCATION, N.H. — A New Jersey man, 55, was rescued early Sunday morning after falling 60 feet while ice climbing on Shoestring Gully in Harts Location.
The climber, Slavek Zaglewski of Oakland, N.J., was climbing with his friend, Mariusz Markewicz, when he slipped and fell on a steep section near the top of the climb. Zaglewski sustained injuries to his arm and head. With no cell service at the location, Markewicz secured Zaglewski, dressed him in warm clothes, and climbed up to the ridge to call 911 for help around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
New Hampshire Fish and Game Conservation Officers were joined by 28 volunteers from the Mountain Rescue Service, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, and Bartlett/Jackson Ambulance Service in the rescue effort. A small Mountain Rescue Service team ascended the gully to reach Zaglewski, while the larger rescue group hiked up the ridge with equipment to hoist him out of the gully.
Rescuers stabilized Zaglewski’s injuries, treated him for hypothermia, and placed him in a litter. The team raised him nearly 400 feet to level ground and carried him down a steep, two-mile trail to the trailhead, using roped belays to navigate difficult sections. Zaglewski reached the trailhead shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday – more than 10 hours after the initial call. He was transported by ambulance to Maine Health Memorial Hospital in North Conway for treatment.
