BOW – Sometimes, Bow High boys’ basketball coach Scott Drapeau needs to remind himself that three of his starters are sophomores. One second they could make the perfect read; the next, they might throw the ball out of bounds.
Despite that relative youth leading to some up-and-down results through a 3-3 start, the Falcons left no doubt on Friday about how good they can be this season, turning in a mostly complete effort in a 72-57 win over Milford.
“I thought that we came with a different demeanor tonight,” Drapeau said. “We were better at playing the ball tonight compared to the other night. Just overall, I gotta remember, they’re still sophomores. Most of them are sophomores. But for the most part, I was impressed with the composure; we played at our tempo instead of their tempo, which we haven’t been doing.”
Bow sophomore Jake Reardon led the Falcons (4-3) with 23 points, including eight in the first quarter when the team jumped out to a 23-8 lead. Sophomore Peyton Larrabee scored 17 points, while senior Colby Smith and junior Keenan Hubbard each had 11.
It was about as well-rounded an effort as Drapeau could’ve hoped for.
“I don’t think there was one person that stood out,” he said. “I think everybody did something well. If the game was perfect, if everybody was perfect, the game would never be fun. I thought that we played team basketball tonight. Everybody chipped in and played a certain part and role.”
Bow maintained a double-digit lead on the Spartans (2-5) throughout most of the game, carrying a 38-25 advantage to halftime and a 57-40 edge through the end of the third quarter.
Now seven games into the season, Bow’s alternated win-loss each time out. On Wednesday against Hanover, a slow start doomed the Falcons in a 64-52 loss.

Friday’s quick beginning certainly set the tone, but the Falcons still came away from the win with several areas to work on, namely fouls and free throws. Both Reardon and Hubbard picked up their third fouls in the game before halftime, a predicament the Falcons can’t afford to find themselves in during future tight games.
Bow also shot just 6-of-21 from the free throw line, a paltry 29%.
“They’re young,” Drapeau said. “They’re young kids. But for the most part, I’m impressed with the way they played. They’re young, but they come to work every day in practice; they come to work every day for a game. Sometimes the ball bounces the way it’s supposed to, and sometimes it doesn’t, but I’m impressed with just the composure for most of it.”
The Falcons will look to win back-to-back games for the first time all season when they host winless Souhegan (0-5) on Tuesday.
