The extended winter weather has impacted all spring sports, and track and field is no exception. But after facing two weeks of many canceled and modified meets, area high school teams finally were able to compete in a large invitational over the weekend.
Several area teams competed at the 29-team Sanborn Invitational, the largest NHIAA meet that’s been able to run so far this spring. It’s still early, but if Saturday’s results are any indicator, several local athletes will be in the hunt for hardware when those same athletes return to Sanborn Regional High School for the Division II and III championships on May 31.
John Stark senior Joel Douzanis, Merrimack Valley senior Aiden Paquette and Bow junior Julia Hou were among the 14 athletes who set new meet records out of the 36 events contested.
Douzanis set the shot put record on his second attempt with a toss of 49 feet, 2 inches, and also matched that mark on his third attempt. Douzanis, the defending D-II outdoor shot put champion and D-II runner-up this past indoor season, won Saturday’s event by nearly 5½ feet.
Douzanis was the highlight on an excellent day for the Generals in the field events, with senior Rio Calle winning the long jump (20-11.25) and finishing second in the high jump, while Owen Dion (third shot put, sixth javelin), Grant Spooner (fourth shot put) and Ethan Veilleux (fifth 200) also medaled for the Stark boys.
Paquette set the triple jump record on his third attempt, a leap of 43-11.25, over 2 feet farther than the mark that gave him the D-II runner-up spot at last year’s championship. He also finished fourth in the discus.
MV had several excellent performances in the jumps, with fellow senior Nicolas Oglesby third in both the triple jump (43-0) and tying for third in the high jump, which was won by MV sophomore Owen Turner at 6-2. Logan Vong came in fifth in the triple jump.
The Pride also did well in the relays, with Chris Bode, Vong, Turner and Ogelsby finishing fourth in the 4x100 and Mychal Reynolds (third 300 hurdles) joining Bode, Vong and Turner on the fifth-place 4x400 team.
