Letter: Closing of Children’s Place the end of an era

I was saddened to read of the closing of The Children’s Place. As it was for Jodi Roos, The Children’s Place was life changing for me. Kay Sidway, the original full-time child care/ teacher was like a second mother to me (as she was to many others!) and was a source of much learning and support. Jodi, too, was an invaluable resource as I was navigating first time motherhood with no close family nearby. I formed many lifelong friendships during my involvement with The Children’s Place, women who have since gone on to contribute greatly to all aspects of life in Concord and the surrounding area.

I suspect one of the biggest factors in the inablility to be self sustaining in 2024 is the lack of volunteers available during the day. In the late 1980s/early 1990s, all the day-to-day tasks, as well as the governance, was done by volunteer parents. Only Ms. Sidway and Ms. Roos were paid staff. In today’s economy, that pool of volunteer labor is no longer available. Like many others, I’m sure, I will always hold fond memories of The Children’s Place.
