Letter: Each child is worth every penny

I am writing to encourage caring people to attend the deliberative session of the Kearsarge Regional School Board on Jan. 4 at 9 a.m. at the high school in Sutton. Who doesn’t care about the well-being of our children? There is an article being proposed to drastically cut funding for our schools. This plan is radical and frankly irrational with no regard for the impact it would have on the students, our future citizens. I am a grandparent who actively engages with our school system by volunteering at KRES-Bradford. Every day, I see wonderful things happen. A struggling child is assisted by trained and compassionate adults. A community of children is gathered for celebration of the school’s code of honor. A child beams with newfound self-confidence. Acts of kindness abound. All of this is possible because of the superb staffing and excellent leadership in our schools.

I cannot fathom why this isn’t the priority of every citizen in the Kearsarge District. Maybe, if more people volunteered, they would share my experience of being uplifted by the fine work our schools are doing. At the very least, please come out and vote to deny this petition. Many of us struggle to make ends meet and there are solutions that can be negotiated by thoughtful debate, not but random schemes. Each child is worth every penny we can spend.
