Letter: To residents of the Kearsarge Regional School District

Published: 12-27-2024 7:00 AM

As a parent, taxpayer, and social worker, I understand concerns about rising school costs. However, the proposed $27,000 per student budget cap fails to reflect the critical needs of our schools and community. Schools are more than classrooms; they provide meals, counseling, extra-curriculars, and specialized services for all students, including those with disabilities. Public schools serve every child, regardless of ability or circumstance, which private school tuition comparisons fail to consider. A rigid cap would force deep cuts, increasing class sizes, eliminating jobs, and threatening programs that support academic success and mental health.

Cuts could also mean school closures, forcing families to send children with special needs to schools far from home. These decisions would strain families, disrupt education, and weaken our community. While fiscal responsibility is vital, it must not come at the expense of our students’ future. I encourage residents to attend the budget hearing on Jan. 4 at 9 a.m. at Kearsarge Regional High School. Let’s ensure decisions reflect the voices and priorities of the entire community. I urge voters to reject this petition and protect the investments that help our children thrive, strengthen our families, and safeguard the future of Kearsarge.
