Letter: More on the Satanic Temple

In response to Adam Czarkowski’s letter of Dec. 14, there is a difference between a religion and a cult. A legitimate religion promotes, human dignity, altruism, solidarity with the poor, and other such honorable and ethical behavior. Whereas those that are sometimes called religions, but which are really cults, promote unethical, bizarre, and even hateful practices. I think of the Jim Jones cult of several decades ago, where their charismatic leader persuaded hundreds of the members to commit suicide. There are also certain fundamentalist groups which commit murder and other terrorist acts in the name of their religion.

There are too many of these cults to mention here, but down through history some so-called religious groups, and certainly some Satanists, have practiced torture and ritualistic human sacrifices, cannibalism, and other horrors. I realize that there are the ethical tenets of this Satanic Temple which look good on paper, but then why employ satanic imagery and use the detestable name Satan at all? Perhaps there is really more on their agenda than just noble ethical principles. Mayor Champlin was right about not wanting this group to have a display in front of the State House.
