Letter: Lawmakers should oppose restrictions on reproductive health

I’m writing in strong opposition to HB 1541, which deeply restricts abortion after 15 weeks, and HB 1248, which is a total abortion ban. There is no doubt that passing these bills will jeopardize the lives and health of New Hampshire residents. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade almost two years ago, we have witnessed the impact of similar laws passed across the country. So far, 21 states have fully or partially banned access to abortion, and the consequences are becoming clear. Every day we see devastating headlines like Texas resident Katie Cox, who was denied her request for an abortion even though her fetus had been diagnosed with a fatal abnormality.

Everyone deserves access to health care in their own state, including abortion, without barriers or political interference. These bills will harm Granite Staters and prevent them from accessing the health care they need. I am convinced that New Hampshire can do better, and voters agree. When abortion is on the ballot, voters have overwhelmingly favored access. Polls show that the vast majority of the state´s residents agree that patients should be the ones to make decisions regarding their health without the interference of politicians. In a state where voters overwhelmingly believe that reproductive health decision should be made solely between patient and medical provider, I urge the NH Legislature to reject HB 1541 and HB 1248 and protect the lives and reproductive health of all Granite Staters.
