Public hero, private grief Russell Durgin, an Army sergeant, died June 13, 2006, defending the sniper team he had led on a mission in the remote Korengal Valley. In the weeks that followed his death, his body was received home with honors befitting a hero: a flag flown in his name above the State House, a candlelight vigil attended by hundreds and a flag-lined funeral procession. Friends and strangers alike turned out to salute him. But those who feel Durgin's absence in their daily lives mourn more than the hometown hero. Their grief is daily and consuming.

Fifty years ago, common terns had all but disappeared from the Isles of Shoals. Though they had nested there for centuries, the seabirds were driven away by hunters and the growing seagull population. Between mid-February and mid-April, the New Hampshire maple industry produces close to 90,000 gallons of maple syrup. As the frozen sap in the maple tree thaws, it begins to move and build up pressure within the tree. When the internal pressure reaches a certain point, sap will flow from any fresh wound in the tree. On Friday night, a group of 14 girls sat around a circle inside a quiet gym at Gilford High School. If you didn't already know, it would be hard to tell that this group of high schoolers owned the longest winning streak in Class M volleyball history. And head coach Joan Forge likes it that way.
"Our girls are not cocky, they don't strut their stuff, they are just happy," Forge said.
As seniors said their final parting words to their teammates, few could hold back the tears.
"Thank you for making me into the player and person I am," senior Sarah Wainwright told Forge.
This pre-championship ritual is just one of the many traditions at Gilford. Winning the Class M title another. The Golden Eagles have brought home the trophy for 9 of the last ten years in addition to winning 85 straight games.
