Author Ty Gagne will discuss his latest book, “The Lions of Winter: Survival and Sacrifice on Mount Washington”, at Gibson's Bookstore, 45 South Main St., Concord, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. Gagne will be joined by Laura Knoy for a conversation about the book, which recounts a pivotal tragedy in the history of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
The book focuses on the events of Jan. 25, 1982, when Albert Dow, a volunteer with the Mountain Rescue Service, died in an avalanche during a four-day search for two missing ice climbers on Mount Washington. Dow remains the only backcountry search and rescue team member to die in the line of duty in the White Mountains. His teammate, Michael Hartrich, was injured in the accident.
Gagne chronicles the ordeal of the missing climbers, the courage and dedication of the rescuers, and the devastating aftermath for Dow’s family, friends, and colleagues. The avalanche occurred in terrain previously considered low-risk, highlighting the unpredictable dangers of mountain rescue work. The tragedy marked a turning point for search and rescue operations in the White Mountains, shaping protocols and safety measures in the decades that followed.
Gagne is known for his sensitive and thorough approach to storytelling, working closely with the families of those involved. His writing aims to honor the bravery and sacrifice of both the rescuers and the individuals they strive to save.
In addition to “The Lions of Winter”, Gagne is the author of “The Last Traverse” and “Where You’ll Find M.” He is also a certified Wilderness First Responder and serves as CEO of New Hampshire Public Risk Management Exchange.
The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. Copies of Gagne’s books will be available for purchase at the bookstore.
