Letter: Kissing Trump’s Ring?

A Jan. 10 letter to the Monitor lamented the decision by Meta to end its fact-checking activity. This may not be as bad as the writer suggests. By eliminating fact-checking, Meta aligns itself with X and Truth Social by acknowledging, as the writer stated, that it “has no integrity or allegiance to fact or truth.” Even if Meta were to continue fact-checking, who would check the fact-checker (with a nod to Dr. Seuss)?

There is a possibility that rather than enslave us all, as the writer predicted, this change may actually be liberating. If it’s acknowledged that any post could be inaccurate, fanciful or deliberately bogus, we might rely less on social media for information. We might even go back to getting most of our information from newspapers — imagine that.
