Pembroke City Limits in Pembroke will host a film screening and discussion of the documentary “It’s Criminal” (2017) on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. The film, which takes place at the New Hampshire State Prison, examines the economic and social inequities that divide the United States and offers a vision of how separated communities can learn to speak to each other.

The Q&A session will feature director/producer Signe Taylor, as well as Pati Hernandez, founder of the non-profit organization Telling My Story, and Ivy Schweitzer, a professor of English at Dartmouth. Hernandez and Schweitzer co-created and co-taught the Dartmouth class documented in “It’s Criminal.” Malika, a formerly incarcerated woman highlighted in the film, will join the session remotely.

“It’s Criminal” highlights the economic and social inequities that divide the United States and offers a vision of how separated communities can learn to speak to each other. Poignant and personal, the documentary shares the life-changing journeys of incarcerated women and Dartmouth College students working together to write and perform an original play that explores the often painful and troubled paths that landed the women behind bars and also shares some of their fragile visions for the future.

Taylor hopes that by capturing incarcerated women and Dartmouth College students getting to know each other, the film will inspire others to do the same.

The screening is free of charge and requires no advance ticket purchase. Pembroke City Limits is located at 134 Main Street in Pembroke. For more information, visit www.pembrokecitylimits.com.
