The John Stark Model UN Club attended the UMass Lowell Model UN Conference on April 4 and 5. This conference offers students the opportunity to debate critical issues facing the global community, as well as develop public speaking, research, and writing skills, in a traditional Model UN setting. The UMass Lowell Model UN is one of the premier high school conferences in New England, drawing nearly 100 delegates each spring. John Stark Model UN Club students who participated, with their committees and countries, were Emily Barriere, Security Council, Albania; Shayne Sargent, NATO, Albania (homeschool student); Evan Browne, Economic and Social Council, Nepal; Daphne Walsh, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Nepal; and Tess Mosher, World Health Organization, Nepal.
Some of the topics discussed were: Reforming the UN Security Council Provisional Rules of Procedure to promote greater equity of global concerns, Combatting Russia’s aggression in Eastern Europe, Global Energy Supply Chain Disruptions, Combating the Resurgence and Evolution of Vector-borne Diseases, Protecting Natural, and Cultural Heritage and Addressing the Modern Drug Trade.
Before attending the Model UN Conference, students prepared by researching their committee, country, and topic. Each student also submitted a position paper prior to attending the conference. The John Stark Model UN Club Advisor is social studies teacher Jessica Regal.
