Bishop Brady’s first five batters all scored in their first two at-bats, and the entire lineup drove in RBIs on their way to a 16-5 rout of rival Hopkinton.

It was a similar story for the girls. The Giants came out of the gate hot and scored eight runs in the first two innings on seven hits and two walks. Even though Hopkinton shut them out for the remaining five innings, the difference was too much to make up.

In both contests, the Hawks found ways to do some damage, but fell short of coming back.

Baseball: Bishop Brady 16, Hopkinton 5

Bishop Brady’s batters swung aggressively in the first two innings to score 14 runs. After patches of rain almost postponed the game, head coach Skip Foy told his boys to push on the offense in case showers cut the game short.

Before the game on Wednesday, Bishop Brady had only allowed five runs all season through six games and Hopkinton matched that tally in this one game alone.

“We didn’t make any errors, we always try to pride ourselves on playing good defense,” Foy said. “They’re a pretty good hitting team. They’re better than their record.”

Junior Winn Thomas, sophomore Max Guerra, junior Ronan Hetherman and sophomore Luke Bedard managed to get on base three times each, and the rest of the Giants found pitches in the zone they could hit.

With the win, Bishop Brady improved to 6-1 on the season and will return home to play Campbell on Friday afternoon before going away to play against Hopkinton in Cooperstown.

“We’re just trying to improve. We think we can be one of the best teams in the state,” Foy added. “We got it, we got talent and a pretty good group of kids, but just gotta keep working.”

For the Hawks, senior Bronson Amman hit his first career home run to pull some runs in his team’s favor, and in total, the team had seven hits on the day. Hopkinton still has a chance of making the playoffs, but according to head coach Kevin Hill, it will have to continue working on its defense and start with a stronger winning mentality to get there, starting the season 1-6.

Softball: Bishop Brady 8, Hopkinton 2

Hopkinton had solid contact and struck out sparingly, but only managed a few hits and could not string together a rally against Giants’ pitcher Abby Tyrell to come back after going down early.

Sophomore Aurelia Salce and junior Skylar Clay had two hits each. Salce, a catcher, blocked many difficult pitches and also threw out a runner trying to steal second to lead the Hawks’ defense.

“We need to clean up our defense and bring intensity to the games. We were flat today until the later part of the game. But we will learn from it and move on,” Hopkinton head coach Liz Kovar said about the loss.

Going into the game, both teams had the same record, 3-2.

Bishop Brady head coach Shane Baron explained that after a slow start to the season, his team’s bats are starting to come alive and pitching is finding its groove. The main goal is to earn a home playoff seed after falling to Gilford away from home in last year’s quarterfinal.

“We lost a couple of close games in the beginning, so I’ve told them the point of this is to get to the playoffs, to get to that four seed,” he said. “It’s a good close rivalry with them, so good win.”
