The Hopkinton Middle School girls’ basketball team won the Tri-County Division III championship on Saturday with a 33-23 victory over Weare. The Hawks played excellent defense, holding Weare to just five points in the second half. Ella-Mai Johnson (12 points) and Ellie Collins (10 rebounds, four points) led Hopkinton. The Hawks end the year with a 13-0 record, while Weare ends at 11-4.
■The Hopkinton boys’ basketball team fell behind early to top-seeded and undefeated Presentation of Mary, 65-58, in the Tri-County D-III championship. Nathan Spofford scored 16 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter of the semifinals to lead Hopkinton past Hillsboro-Deering, 65-50, in the semifinals. Quinn Coombs and Mason Poland paced the Hillcats, who led 35-32 after three quarters in front of an energized and vocal home crowd. Tommy Dwyer, Cooper Owens, Mason Gilman, Jack Bennett and Max Goupil all had major contributions for the Hawks.
In Concord Parks & Recreation middle school basketball action, the Blue Knights beat the Pacers thanks to Brody Taylor’s 14 points, followed by Maxwell Negron with 12. Keyan Conlon added great defense. In the second game, the Knights prevailed 45-19 against the Heat. Sabin Darjee had nine points while Hancock Nibafashe added four points, led the team in steals and also played well at point guard. Emma Ntunzwenimana had four points and captured many rebounds.
Spartans Basketball, will be holding spring AAU basketball tryouts at the New England Sports Center in Derry. Tryouts will be open to boys and girls in grades 2-12. The next tryout date is Friday. Grades 2-6 will try out from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Grades 7-8 will try out from 6:30-7:30 p.m. High school boys and girls will try out from 7:30-8:30.
